Benefits of multiple SMART boards in one room

While flip charts have been replaced by new technology in many ways, perhaps their biggest advantage lies in their simplicity. With a flipchart once a sheet is full you simply rip it off, stick it up on the wall and carry on writing on a clean sheet of paper. Your notes can be on display for the rest of the meeting, for everyone to see, and you can continue ripping and sticking until the flipchart runs out. How can newer technology such as interactive white boards and SMART boards replicate this useful function? Surely once a whiteboard is full of text that’s it, you have to wipe it clean and start again, removing the notes from view?

The answer is multi-boarding – having multiple SMART boards in one room. Once you’ve filled in all the space on one board you can move onto the next and carry on writing, keeping the existing content on view. Better still, you can display several screens of information at the same time when you use multiple SMART boards. For example, during a training session you could display a PowerPoint presentation on one board, a YouTube video on another and make handwritten notes on a third, all at the same time. Running a set up like this is simple, as you can control any number of SMART boards from one computer. You can also share content between boards or push content from board to board – so that, for example, you always have the content you’re discussing on the central board, but the other material is still on display throughout.

Another benefit of multiple SMART boards in one room is that you can have several groups working at the same time. This is especially useful in team situations – once you’ve discussed a project you can break off into smaller groups who each work on their own SMART board – no more fighting for control of one board! Once the group work is completed you can then share the individual screens, either displaying one team’s work on all boards or displaying all the boards at once and switching focus between them.

Taking this to the next stage, having multiple boards in one room can improve global collaboration. Imagine you have teams located in India, America and France, and you are based in the UK. Each team has their own SMART board and you have three boards in your office. The potential is there for you to pull in the feed from each board so that you can see all three teams’ work at the same time, in real time, despite them being thousands of miles away from you and each other. You could also “push” each team’s board through to the other teams so that everyone can see the ideas generated throughout the session. A set up like this could be complex to set up, but it does demonstrate just how flexible SMART boards are, especially when you use more than one in the same room.
