Case Study: How Tullow Oil uses SMART technology for cost savings and improved operational decisions

Tullow Oil is the leading oil producing company in Africa. With operations in 22 countries, 37 oil fields and a headquarters in London communication has been a problem in the past. However, since installing a SMART Board the company has saved money through reduced travel time and costs, and the decision making process has been improved too.

Managing the oil production process is a complex affair, but the introduction of technology has made it less challenging and there have been many other benefits too. Tullow Oil needs to capture data from each of its 37 oilfields and in the past this was done by hand, a process that was time consuming and prone to errors. The data needs to be shared with a multi-disciplinary team comprising geologists, engineers and production technologists, as well as other staff and the marketing team in London. In the past meetings were arranged to set the date of meetings, staff often had to travel large distances and the whole process was complicated

How Tullow Oil uses SMART technology for cost savings and improved operational decisionsTullow Oil then began using a system called TAP – Technology Assisted Production – to collect, process and disseminate the data. They set up a collaboration hub in the Accra (Ghana) office, complete with a SMART Board, and this has become the central focus for all data analysis. Representatives from each discipline meet regularly and the data is displayed, manipulated and annotated on the SMART Board. The use of Bridgit conferencing software means the well engineer teams and the London marketing team can also join the meeting via their own computers. Whereas arranging meetings was a challenge in the past, it’s now become second nature for all the engineers to come together every day, either in the collaboration workspace or remotely, to share everyone’s data.

The biggest benefit to Tullow Oil has been the reduction in travel time and expense – the company believes the combination of TAP and the SMART Board has, indirectly, saved them tens of thousands of dollars. However, another benefit has been the reduction in the need for offshore travel, which has improved the health and safety of staff. There’s also been an operational benefit too because of the TAP / SMART Board implementation. The production process can now be monitored very closely at a fine level of detail and the overview is easier to see too, leading to faster and more efficient decision making.

Armed with them as part of the TAP system, we can visualise the production data coming in, annotate the information on the screen, collaborate in the room within a multi-disciplinary team and share data remotely in real-time with our colleagues in other offices.”
