Combining SMART Boards and video conferencing for improved communication

SMART Boards and video conferencing are two very distinct and different forms of communication technology – and they have their specific uses. So why would you think about combining SMART Boards and video conferencing for improved communication – and what are the benefits anyway?

SMART Boards on their own are great tools for collaboration, both locally and remotely. If you need to view and work on documents with colleagues in your office or at another location they are ideal for this purpose, especially as you can save your meeting notes and share them with people afterwards, or continue working on them at a later date. You can use third party programs, such as iObeya project management software or AUTOCad on your SMART Board, and you can enable your team, partners, customers and suppliers to join meetings where you can brainstorm, collaborate on work, view video and images and pull together ideas. SMART Boards integrate with tools such as WebEx so you can invite your contacts easily, and there’s even Bridgit software that extends remote access to users via their iPad, laptop or computer.

So how does video conferencing fit into the scenario? Well perhaps the biggest issue with using a SMART Board is its anonymity. OK, it could be that you only collaborate with people you know on a personal basis, but often you might be talking to a supplier on the other side of the world you’ve only ever emailed, or delivering training to a team at another depot that you’ve never met. And this anonymity can mean people are reluctant to communicate as well as they would if they could actually see the people they were working with.

Enter video conferencing. By combining SMART Boards and video conferencing you improve communication because everyone can see each other. You can exchange smiles, identify body signals and spot those vital facial expressions that help us understand each other. Words on their own are useful, but when you add the visuals too you pave the way for far more effective communication and collaboration between people who can connect with each other on a personal level – however many miles are between them.
