How to collaborate remotely on software development projects

Software development is a global business and projects often require teams in different countries to collaborate. However, expecting team members to travel to project meetings is costly and time consuming and can result in delays or errors occurring.

A better solution is to use technology to include everyone in the meeting room regardless of where they are physically located. The SMART range of interactive white boards allow you to do just that, by letting you connect remotely to partners and teams and giving everyone the opportunity to collaborate, either from dedicated SMART Boards, mobile Podium devices or through their computer, laptop or tablet using the SMART Bridgit software.

There are many ways to collaborate remotely – for example, you can use video conferencing or web conferencing, or tools such as Sharepoint or Google Docs that give multiple people access to the same documents. However, these all have their drawbacks. Videoconferencing is fine for face-to-face communication but you can’t share and collaborate on data easily. Web conferencing lets you share video and documents, but it tends to be a one way process led by a single presenter, where other participants can only take part verbally. And while document sharing tools let several people work on the same files, there is no true collaboration as everyone is effectively working independently. Worse, this way of working can lead to confusion if people are working on documents at the same time, as there can be several different versions in existence.

SMART Boards give you all the benefits of a face-to-face meeting without you actually having to be in the same room. You can open a document, video or application on one screen and let everyone see the same information in real time. You can run brainstorm activities, review designs and schematics, set schedules and work together on your project and everyone has the opportunity to write on the screen, overwrite documents and highlight important features. And at the end of the session the entire meeting can be captured and shared, both with the meeting participants and with other colleagues or stakeholders.

Using SMART technology to collaborate remotely on software development has many benefits. As well as reducing the requirement for travel, you can identify potential glitches in your software before you go to market, improve communication, make decisions much more quickly and, ultimately, reduce the time your projects take to complete. SMART Boards give everyone equal opportunity to take part in the meeting, leading to true collaboration where everyone counts regardless of their location. It opens the door to accessing the very best resources for your project because distance is no longer an issue. And it helps you deliver better, smarter results for your clients.
