In a recent post we talked about LifeSize UVC, the only fully integrated virtualised software platform for video infrastructure. Released earlier this year, UVC has just been updated and has several new features and applications.
To recap, UVC is a truly flexible platform that lets you access a number of video services via a single interface. Available both as virtual machine software (VMware and Microsoft Hyper-V) or hardware, the platform itself and all the applications are free to try and the flexible licensing means you can buy only what you require now and upgrade or upscale as and when you need to.
In this article we’re going to take a look at three of the applications you can use on UVC: Video Center, Manager and Transit.
UVC Video Center
The Video Center application provides a one button solution to HD video streaming, recording and auto-publishing. The newest version is more secure than ever and has enhanced streaming, allowing 1000-2000 high definition streams simultaneously. Videos can be created with chapters, making organisation and playback simple, and there is an improved text chat facility and the option to playback audio only. Another useful feature is the addition of closed captioning – you can easily add subtitles to your videos, removing language barriers. Finally, you can dial in from many devices, including SIP phones, to start instant video recording.
UVC Manager is an IT administration tool that simplifies the management of your video infrastructure. By grouping your video devices into networks you can monitor each network, schedule calls and upgrade your devices right from the interface. The wizard-based task tools mean you can manage your video networks simply, without needing to refer to a manual.
The Transit application manages firewalls and NAT traversal to enable you to make video calls within and across your networks. The wizard-based deployment tools are easy to use and you can review your settings and configure each network independently as required. The application ensures all your security settings are correct and has support for IPv6, acting as a gateway between IPv4 and IPv6 devices.
In a future post we’ll look at the remaining applications – Multipoint, Access and Video Engine – and we’ll also find out about the new Capacity Planning tool.
